Female model plays David Bowie in French Sci-Fi movie

A female Belgian model named Hannelore Knuts is playing David Bowie in a film simply called “Dave”.
The plot of Dave reads as followed: “The main character of the film travels back in time to stop three lookalikes of David Bowie, at different times.”

According to Twitch, the directors of Dave — Wim Reygaert, Stephen Dewaele, and David Dewaele — initially approached Tilda Swinton for the role. Reygaert and the Dewaeles are collectively known as DJ Soulwax. They’ve released remixes of Bowie songs under that name, including “Rebel Rebel” and “Heroes.”

Hanelore on Bowie: “I’m a fan of Bowie, so I immediately said yes. Bowie’s work is so varied that you can get lost in it. Unfortunately I have never seen him in concert, but I really love songs like Changes and Absolute Beginners. Also, Let’s Dance is pure childhood nostalgia for me. Ziggy Stardust was very inspiring for the part, while I often used photoshoots of The Man Who Fell To Earth as a reference point. In this Bowie plays an alien with a human appearance. On my toilet I always had a still from this film. Everyone who saw it saw many similarities between Bowie and myself. I never adored by style icons, but maybe Bowie unconsciously influenced me. ”

How did she prepare for this role?

“If someone asks you to play Bowie, you need to know which Bowie. Wim Reygaert had to steer me in the right direction. Most of my inspiration came from the Thin White Duke, Bowie’s alter ego in 1976 from the album Station to Station. I spent most of the summer with dyed orange hair, but otherwise I did not really prepare. Playing a man as a woman was actually not that difficult. Bowie himself is a very androgynous figure with both male and female traits. ”

Dave will screen at the Gand International Film Festival in Belgium this month.
